Agentic Storefronts: How to Sell Inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot in 2026

Your next customer might not be a person. It might be an AI agent shopping on someone’s behalf.

That sounds like a stretch until you look at the numbers. Adobe reported in March 2026 that AI-referred traffic converted 42 percent better than non-AI traffic, a full reversal from a year earlier when it lagged. Shoppers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity what to buy, and they are buying right there in the chat.

If you run a Shopify store, you can already plug into this. The feature is called Agentic Storefronts, and it lets people buy your products without ever landing on your site. Here is how it works and how to turn it on.

What an Agentic Storefront actually is

Normally, when someone finds your product in an AI answer, they click through to your store to check out. That extra hop loses sales.

An Agentic Storefront removes the hop. The shopper completes the purchase inside the AI surface, and the order still flows into your Shopify admin like any other.

There are two pieces to understand. Shopify Catalog makes your products discoverable across AI platforms by sharing your product data. Agentic Storefronts add the in-chat checkout on top, so the buying happens in the conversation.

The good news for Shopify merchants: your products are automatically discoverable in ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no setup. The checkout piece is what you switch on.

How each channel handles the sale

This is where it pays to know the details, because the four big channels behave differently.

ChatGPT. Buyers complete checkout in an in-app browser, and orders land in your Shopify admin. Your products show up automatically through Shopify Catalog.

Google AI Mode. Agentic Storefronts enable true in-chat checkout powered by Shopify, with orders flowing to your admin. You toggle direct checkout per channel under Settings, then Sales Channels.

Microsoft Copilot. Copilot launched its in-chat checkout in January 2026 with Shopify, PayPal, and Stripe, and eligible Shopify merchants were enrolled automatically. It is one of the few channels running live in-chat checkout at scale.

Perplexity. This one is different. Perplexity makes your listings discoverable, but checkout runs through PayPal’s Instant Buy, not Shopify’s checkout. So those orders are managed in PayPal, not your Shopify admin. You can also join the free Perplexity Merchant Program to share product data directly.

The takeaway: not every channel sends orders to the same place. Know where each one routes before you flip switches, so your fulfillment team is not caught off guard.

How to turn it on

The setup is lighter than you would expect.

First, check your Shopify admin for Agentic Storefronts. As of early 2026 the feature has been rolling out in early access, so availability varies by store. Look under your sales channel settings.

Second, for Google and Copilot, go to Settings, then Sales Channels, and toggle direct checkout on or off per channel. You stay in control of which surfaces can sell directly.

Third, for Perplexity, apply to the Merchant Program. It is free and connects your product data to their results.

That is the mechanical part. The harder, more valuable work is making your product data good enough that the agents actually pick you.

Your product data is the real product now

Here is the shift. When an AI agent is the shopper, your product page design barely matters. Your product data is everything.

Agents read structured attributes: title, description, price, availability, materials, dimensions, and specs. Thin or messy data means the agent skips you for a competitor with cleaner listings.

So before chasing every channel, fix the basics. Write complete, specific product descriptions. Fill in every attribute field. Keep inventory and pricing accurate, because an agent that quotes a wrong price or sells an out-of-stock item creates a refund and a bad review.

Clean data is the single highest-leverage thing you can do for AI commerce. It helps you across every channel at once.

A simple first move this week

You do not need to be on all four channels day one.

Start with the channel that fits your buyer. ChatGPT has the widest reach. Perplexity tends to bring higher-intent shoppers. Copilot has live checkout and a more professional audience. Pick one, get your data clean, switch on checkout, and watch how the orders behave.

Then expand to a second channel once you trust the first. Treating these as one big “AI channel” is a mistake, because each has its own feed rules and its own shopper.

The takeaway

Agentic Storefronts let people buy your products inside the AI conversation, with most orders flowing straight to your Shopify admin. Setup is a few toggles, but the win comes from clean, complete product data that agents can actually read.

Turn on one channel this week, fix your product feed, and you are ahead of the stores still treating AI as a place to get mentioned rather than a place to get paid.
